Sony Backtracks – Jelly Bean For 2011 Xperia Lineup Still A Possibility

It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for those still hanging onto their Sony handsets from 2011. Sony was one of the first OEM’s to not only publicly acknowledge the existence of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but went as far as promising they would work hard at bringing the upgraded OS to their entire 2011 Xperia lineup. Commendable and refreshing. More recently, a Sony rep appeared on the company’s UK Facebook page and during a Q&A session, mentioned that Jelly Bean for Sony’s 2011 devices had essentially been abandoned. This didn’t sit too well with Sony users and the bad news spread quickly.
Today, Sony Mobile announced via their official blog that the previous information released on their Facebook page was in error, and that they are, in fact, still “investigating” the possibility of bringing Jelly Bean to as many of their 2011 Xperia devices as possible. That may not sound very reassuring but at least you know they’re giving it the ‘ol college try. Sony also went on to remind users that ICS is still coming to confirmed devices (sorry Xperia Play users) and they’re also busy working on that.
Firmware updates on Android are always tricky. Sometimes it feels like Android OEM’s avoid upgrades, instead using them as an incentive to upgrade to on of their newer devices. Sony Mobile (formerly Sony Ericsson) has always been different. They’re one of the few OEM’s that always seem genuinely excited about new updates and getting them out to their customers as soon as possible. Most devices never see more than 1 OS upgrade in their lifetime. At the very least you know Sony is trying.
